About Sports Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine centered around mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these disorders, Doctors of Chiropractic, otherwise known as Chiropractors, use a combination of manual therapy/spinal manipulation, exercises, and health counseling to restore proper health and function to the body.
Driven by a holistic perspective, Chiropractors perform with the belief that spinal and other musculoskeletal disorders have a direct effect on overall health via the nervous system. Therefore, Chiropractic may be used to treat anything from sciatica to migraines to digestive disorders and beyond, with the added benefit of its non-invasive, drug-free, and “total person” approach.
Chiropractic is deeply rooted in the fact that the human body is a self-healing organism which will regulate itself when allowed to work without obstruction. While no one can dispute this scientific fact, some Doctors of Chiropractic choose to distance themselves from the profession’s vitalistic roots which rely heavily on the concept of “Innate Intelligence”, coined by the founder of chiropractic, Dr. Daniel David Palmer.
Since the first recorded chiropractic adjustment, performed by Dr. Palmer on September 18, 1895, Chiropractic as a whole has expanded to include a wide range of philosophies, techniques, and specializations. One such specialization is Sports Chiropractic, a form of Chiropractic which focuses on the complimentary management, rehabilitation, and performance of the neuromusculoskeletal systems of the athlete.
Chiropractors specializing in Sports Chiropractic are highly educated and trained individuals. To become a sports chiropractor, one must first receive a bachelor’s degree, requiring 2-4 or more years of study. After this is achieved, the student will study for another 4 years to receive his or her Doctor of Chiropractic degree. The doctor than takes part in an extensive 120-hour postgraduate program and comprehensive written examination to become a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner (CCSP).
Focusing on the unique needs and injuries of athletes, sports chiropractic aims to improve the mobility and function of the athletic body, resulting in improved performance levels, rapid rehabilitative success, and long-term health. Seeing the exclusive benefits of sports chiropractic, many sports organizations have chosen to allow sports chiropractic an integral part of their health care lineup, including:
● The Players Association of the National Football League
● The United States Olympic Committee, along with several other nations
● Major sporting events, such as the Pan Am Games, New York and Boston Marathon, and Ironman Triathlon
Sports chiropractic specialists are recognized for advancing protective athletic gear, trauma management, health maintenance, therapy, injury rehabilitation, spinal injury prevention, and more. These contributions have led to a safer and healthier world for all athletes, including those taking part in the Olympics and other professional competitive sports.
In addition to traditional chiropractic Manipulation techniques and massage therapy, sports chiropractic uses a number of advanced techniques that are especially beneficial to the athletic body. Some of these techniques include Sports Specific Training, Kinesiology Therapeutic Taping, Active Release Technique and the Graston technique.
